What's my (or someone else') problem? What should I (or they) do?
Let's face it. In our lives we or someone we know will experience some sort of mental illness, or personality disorder. Certainly, we should be able to identify signs of problems within ourselves or other people. Yes, there is a huge variance of what might be considered an illness or "sickness" depending upon culture.
In this assignment you will be granted total anonymity. No one but your teacher will know who you are, or who you are counseling.
Here is what you are to do: Part IIllness Stage.
Let your teacher know what your assigned number is.
Decide on a disorder that you (or someone you know) is experiencing. This can be real or fictional. It does not matter. Once again, we are to respect the condition of anonymity in this assignment/exercise. You should look at the notes under Psychological Disorders and Their Treatment for ideas and general information. Those notes are taken from your textbook. Still you should also consult with our library. (Passwords etc. can be found in this document:
). And you should also look at the DSM-IV, there is one in the reference section of the library, and I have one here in class.
Below you will find a number link for you. There you are to upload your description of what the person (yourself or someone else) is displaying in terms of behavior, thoughts etc. Be creative, but not so far as seeking to be too humorous. This is serious stuff. You can utilize any electronic means you wish for this, from a word document to using cartoons or comic life etc. Be sure that you are illustrating behavior that is consistent with a disorder that you have. (It is not of paramount importance that you be super-creative here. Certainly it counts, but I recognize that not all students are equally blessed when it comes to utilizing technology creatively and thus it is not as important as say what is immediately below).
The detail and clarity with which you are able to communicate the condition you have selected is what I am going to be looking at when grading this portion (as well as you level of creativity). Of course you are not to state what your problem is, or even what you think it is. This is just about description only.
This is to be uploaded by this Friday's (January 8, 2010) first class of the day (8:00 am)
(note that the first category will be multiplied to create your grade):
Part IIDiagnosis Stage.
You are to now going to be assigned a number from below and respond by diagnosing the problem. Your diagnosis must state why as specifically as possible why you selected the condition you did. Your comprehension of the condition is what I am looking to grade first and foremost.
Part III Treatment Stage.
Staying with the same number (patient as in Part II) you are to select and prepare a series of treatments which may include but not necessarily limited to narcotic treatments, therapies, counseling etc for the condition which you have diagnosed. You are to explain the reason why such treatment(s) is (are) to be used. Be sure to cite your sources using APA.
Parts II & III are to be completed by the end of class on Tuesday, January 12, 2010.
The student with the illness is to respond to the diagnosis and treatment. They are to state if in fact the diagnosis and treatment were correct and efficacious. In the event they were not, the student should point out where and why an error was made.
Part IV is due at the beginning of class on Thursday, January 14, for both blocks.
Note
All the above are to be done on the wikispace of the student with the illness.
You are to use the links below to your number.
